Stansted Airport welcomed nearly 200,000 more passengers in June 2014 compared to the same month last year as over 1.85 million passengers passed through the terminal, an increase of 11.7% over June 2013.

The monthly rate of passenger growth in June is the highest the airport has experienced for any month in the last eight years.  This was achieved despite the loss of 88 flights that were cancelled towards the end of the month due to French air traffic control strike action.

The annual number of passengers using the airport rose to 18.48 million, an increase of 4.2% over the previous 12 months.

Andrew Harrison, Stansted’s Managing Director, said:  “The continuing growth of passenger numbers at Stansted clearly demonstrates just how far the airport has come since being acquired by M.A.G last year. To experience our highest monthly rate of growth since 2006 is a fantastic achievement and sends a loud and positive message that Stansted is changing for the better.

“Stansted has a critical role to play in the coming years in meeting the UK’s need to increase connectivity. As the only airport in the congested South-East with significant room to grow, it’s vital we make the most of the infrastructure we already have.

“To this end, we will shortly begin consulting with our local communities on our proposed Sustainable Development Plan that considers the benefits and effects of how the airport might develop to make full use of the existing runway

“We have planning permission for 35 million passengers a year but could provide additional capacity with relatively low impacts, high benefits and supporting the UK’s economic growth ambitions in the most cost effective and sustainable way possible.”

In the 2013 Budget, the Government announced its intention to run a £30 million programme in England

Businesses will receive a subsidy for 50% of consultancy costs in one of 5 key areas up to a value of £2000. 25% of businesses who undergo a diagnostic will not receive a subsidy.

Who is being targeted

  • Micro and small businesses with up to 49 employees.
  • Must be established for 12 months plus
  • Must not have paid for external business advice in the past 3 years
  • They must have the desire to expand and grow their business over the next two to three years
  • 90% of businesses must be registered at Companies House or with HMRC for VAT or PAYE (not just as self-employed)

Diagnostic

Delivery partners will carry out an in-depth analysis of the business to determine which of the five themes will help the business to achieve their growth ambitions. This will be captured in a simple action plan recorded directly on the Growth vouchers database. This identifies what the business needs to focus on as a priority and what external advice they should be seeking from suppliers in the private sector. The diagnostic in itself must provide value to the business.

Of the businesses identified as needing support 75% will be successful in their application.

Support

The Growth Vouchers programme will identify out of 5 key areas what has the greatest impact in terms of business growth. The support will be provided solely by members of professional bodies with appropriate insurance in place. The areas and approved qualification requirements are as follows:

Stansted Airport traffic results for February 2014

Airport Traffic Feb 2014Stansted Airport saw nearly 1.18 million passengers pass through the terminal in February 2014, up 6.9% over the corresponding month last year.

The overall number of passengers using the airport in the 12 months ending February 2014 climbed to 17.99 million, an increase of 3% over the previous year.

Andrew Harrison, Stansted’s Managing Director, said:

“The fact that the number of passengers passing through Stansted in February was 6.9% up on last year underlines just how much Stansted has changed for the better in M.A.G's ownership, and reflects the strong confidence of our airlines as they grow the number of services offered from the airport.

“The overall number of flights at the airport grew by nearly 5% over February last year as Ryanair in particular added more services and increased frequency, and Pegasus Airlines enjoyed strong passenger demand on its services to Turkey and connecting flights to the Middle East from its Istanbul hub.

“The coming weeks will see a significant number of new routes launch from the airport, offering passengers an even greater choice of European destinations, while our work to demonstrate the demand from businesses across the region for long-haul services continues at great pace.

“As our transformation drive to improve terminal facilities and services moves to the next phase as we focus on the re-development of the departure lounge and retail experience following the official opening of our new security area, Stansted’s prospects look very positive as we compete to attract even more passengers and airlines.

Stansted scoops best airport award for the fourth year running

London Stansted Airport is flying high after being crowned the world’s best airport for low-cost airlines for the fourth year in a row at the World Airport Awards.

Stansted’s Managing Director, Andrew Harrison, with the SKYTRAX award at the ceremony in Barcelona on March 26. The airport topped the poll of nearly 13 million passengers in the annual SKYTRAX airport customer survey. The survey focused on all aspects of the passenger journey and captured the opinions of over 110 different nationalities at 410 airports across the world.

At the ceremony in Barcelona, Stansted’s Managing Director, Andrew Harrison, said:

“It’s a fantastic achievement and a very proud moment for everyone at Stansted to be voted the world’s best airport for low-cost airlines for the fourth year in a row. The airport has been at the heart of low-cost travel revolution for the last 15 years and this award demonstrates we are still the undisputed world leader at serving this growing and vibrant airline sector.

“Stansted has returned to growth over the past year as more and more passengers recognise that the airport is the best way to get to and from Europe. The good news for passengers is that Stansted has plenty of room to grow, and with a major investment project underway to transform our terminal, this really is an exciting time for the airport.”

The World Airport Awards ceremony took place on March 26 in Barcelona as part of Passenger Terminal Expo, the world’s leading international airport terminal conference and exhibition.
